All New!

IMG_0262

I’ve been playing with some of the items from the new catalog, but mostly I’ve been mixing them with current items.  This card is mostly made of all-new items, with the exception of the Thank You banner.  I used my Pumpkin Pie Blendabilities to color in my Blended Bloom flower.  I used the new Hello Honey cardstock with a piece of DSP from the new Moonlight paper stack.  (I love these little stacks!  I wish all our DSP came packaged this way!)  I finished it all off with the new Tangelo Twist ribbon.  (That ribbon has such a nice weight and texture!  I love it!)  Finally I used a new technique that my friend, Sally, shared with me.  See how the flower is on the framelit on one side, but cut away on the opposite side?  As I was making this card I remembered that my friend, Diane, showed me this technique previously.  Evidently I forgot all about it!  Thanks girls for the tip!

It’s not too late to order before the new things are available.  You can order things from the retired list until June 4th.  You can order things from the Weekly Deals list until June 1st.  You can order from the Occasions Catalog until June 1st.  I think this last one is most important.  If you want bundles from that catalog at a discounted rate, you’ll need to order those before June 1st!  Some of the items did make it into the new catalog, but they won’t be available at the lower “bundle” rate.  Just a heads up!

Have a great weekend & Happy Stampin!

Coffee Social!

IMG_0252

Do you ever sit down to make a card and then just keep adding things in order to make it just right?  This is how this card was created.  It all started when I had the new Work of Art stamp set out playing with it.  I thought I’d use the brushstrokes to color one of the coffee cups.  But it looked too bare, so I kept adding stamps and embellishments.  I used Perfect Blend for the cups, Gorgeous Grunge to fill in the blank spaces left by Work of Art, and then I topped it off with a stamp set I won at the catalog premiere event called @SoSocial.  It took a while to create since I wasn’t sure how it would end, but I’m happy with it and I think it’s the perfect card to accompany a Starbucks gift card.  Not to mention that I feel so hip that I managed to use a hashtag on a greeting card!  The 2 new sets will be available to purchase on June 2nd, which is only a week away!  Woo Hoo!

Also, just a reminder that it’s Tuesday and that means there are new deals for the week.  I think this week has particularly good offerings because it contains my favorite (and sadly retiring) Stripes Embossing Folder, as well as the Neutrals DSP stack, which is SO versatile.

Happy Stampin!

Nuts About You!

Ok, so maybe I’m just nuts, but I LOVE squirrels.  If it were socially acceptable to have a squirrel as a pet, I would.  When I lived in Florida I visited an old cemetery in St Augustine a few times a year.  It is a nice place to pray, meditate, or just to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.  I, however, went there to feed the squirrels.  I felt like I really got to know them, generation after generation.  It was so sweet how they would see me and rush down out of the trees to take big, juicy, raw peanuts from my hands.  I haven’t found enough squirrels here in Oregon to develop this type of relationship.  Maybe some day.  Meanwhile, my love of squirrels continues.  When I saw the new Nuts About You stamp set, I knew I had to have it.  The tree is nice, the birds are ok, but the squirrels are just adorable!  I love it!

In other news, it’s my understanding that there will be a sale beginning tomorrow, May 22nd.  As a demonstrator, I just learned that some of the retiring items will be offered at a discount of 25-50%!  That’s awesome news.  I guess the down side is that SO many items have already sold out.  If there are things left on your wish list, check my Stampin’ Up site starting tomorrow to see if your items are still available and if they’ve been discounted.
Meanwhile, enjoy your holiday weekend!

The Pumpkin Pie one is my favorite!

Happy Mother’s Day!

I promise I made a card for my mother!  However I had to mail it before I got a working camera, so I have no image to share.  Trust me… it was cute and sweet and I think my mom will like it.

My friend, Sally, however, did take a photo of the Mother’s Day cards she created.  These are pretty and sophisticated.  I love them!  I’m so glad she shared them with me so I can show them to you!

I’m sad that this Framed Tulips embossing folder is retiring.  It was so nice to have it frame other stamped images.  If you don’t have it yet, be sure to get it before it’s sold out!  The flower image she stamped on vellum and punched out is in a stamp set called Flower Shop.  That’s still available as a bundle with the punch, but only until the end of the month.  In June the price will increase as it will only be sold separately.

Have a Happy Mother’s Day weekend!

Stampin’ Blendabilities

I won’t pretend to be an expert on using alcohol based markers.  I have been trying to improve my technique for years and I’m still working on it.  I’m not naturally artistic, so shading and highlighting do not come easily.  Does this mean the new Blendabilities aren’t for me?  No way!  I will continue to learn by doing.

IMG_0188

I made this card for a friend’s daughter who is celebrating her 15th birthday.  I’ve had this stamp set for a few years and never really used it because I thought it would be too hard to color.  Today I pulled out my new Coastal Cabana Blendabilites and colored her dress with the medium and dark markers.  I colored her gloves with the light one.  I love how these packs of 3 contain colors meant to blend together.  It’s so much easier than trying to pick similar colors and make them work together.  I also used the Color Lifter.  The color lifter marker is awesome.  When I colored the dress I also colored in the flowers.  Then I decided I wanted them to be another color so I used the color lifter to “erase.”  Technically it doesn’t work the same as an eraser, but it does allow you to push the color you want to remove so that it goes thru the back of the paper.  That is also handy if you accidently color outside the lines and need to “push” the color back inside.  Keep in mind, however, that this isn’t a miracle marker.  It’s for correcting small mistakes and it takes some patience to use.  I “lifted” the color from those little flowers several times letting them dry in between.

Here are some of my tips for using these markers:

1.  Work on a stack of white scratch paper.  When you color, the color bleeds through.  Having the scratch paper behind the image not only saves your workspace, but it helps the image.  See when I colored the above image, the blues went through to my background paper.  Before I colored my flowers, I made sure to put a fresh piece of paper under my image.  That way my raspberry ripple I used on the flowers would not accidently pick up the coastal cabana from below.  It sounds weird, but it can happen and change the intended color of your image.  I find it’s also helpful to move your image around on your scratch paper while you work to keep from pulling color from underneath.

2.  Work in small sections when blending.  These inks will blend the best when they are still wet.  If you color the entire image and then try to blend another color, it will be frustrating because the original color dried.  I color in sections and blend as I go.  It may seem to take longer, but in the end, it is faster because you’re not having to remoisten the image in order to blend colors.

3.  Use Memento ink when stamping your image.  This sounds weird because it seems you’d want to use Staz-on.  Don’t do it!  The Staz-on will bleed when you start adding the alcohol markers.  Use the Memento!

The markers will be in the new annual catalog, but unfortunately will not be available to order right away.  I’ll let you know when they are in stock.

Swap Shares (& a New Camera!)

I swapped a few cards with the girls on my team at the Portland Catalog Reveal event.  I haven’t shared them until now because my 5-year old camera died.  Now, I loved my camera but I struggled to get good photos inside.  My husband built me a light box and I had some strong lights around it to try to illuminate the photos.  Well, they still looked dark and sad compared to taking them outside.  My new camera arrived yesterday and I tried it out.  Wow!  What a difference a camera makes.  lol  It’s not even a fancy camera, but it does much better in low-light than my old dinosaur one.  Here are the swaps:

I think the photos look much better with the new camera!  I do think I’ll need to add some dark paper behind the white cards in the future, but I’m still learning and it’ll take some trial and error to see what works best.

Happy Stampin’!

Scrapbooking Convention

A couple of weeks ago I spent the weekend in Portland so I could attend the Creating Keepsakes Scrapbooking Convention.  I went with my friend, Margaret, but I ran into so many more friends while I was there.  (The crafting world really is a small one, isn’t it?)  Here are some of the highlights of the weekend:

My friend, Margaret, and I volunteered to help at the convention in order to get in for free.  One of our jobs was putting kits together for future classes.

I won a door prize during the crop!  It was a Stampin’ Up Paper Pumpkin kit.  How’d they know I love Stampin’ Up?

Our table at the crop created a Card-in-a-Box with the supplies we were given for the contest.  This is our entry.  Pictured:  Margaret, Me, Donna

The card won!  And as such, our entire table won a Sizzix die.  We were also entered into the National Competition to represent Portland.

Margaret and I took a Disney themed scrapbook album class.  We’re good students, so we sat on the front row!  lol  That class was awesome.  It lasted a couple of hours and we completed 12 pages!

Till next year….

Catalog Sneak Peek

I attended the new catalog premiere in Portland on Monday.  It was so great to be with a bunch of other demonstrators, to feel the excitement of the new products, and to take some home!  In addition to bringing home the new catalog, I also received a stamp set for attending, as well as a stamp set from winning a drawing while there.

Here were some of the projects shown to participants on Monday night.  They are a preview of some of the things to come!

This first one shows a couple of new products.  The text and background were in the stamp set we were all given at the premiere.  I LOVE the new flower punch style!

The watercolor look is all throughout this year’s catalog.  I love the font on this “thank you” stamp.

thankyou

Shapes are big this year too.  When you combine a bunch of shapes you can make your own, unique piece of art for your projects.

I was sad to see the old heart punch retire, but I do like this new shape.

Gift packaging and party projects are back again.  This project features the stamp set I won.  I might even start using Twitter so I can understand these hashtags!  lol
